Christmas Lights? Really?

People, it's not even Thanksgiving yet! Are we just going to skip the "thankful" holiday altogether this year?! For me, it's kind of like wearing white shoes before Easter - you just don't do it!

I don't know why I kid myself EVERY YEAR thinking that I won't have to explain to my children until AFTER Thanksgiving that Santa will be coming soon. Now, we're just barely past Halloween and they're already asking, "When is Santa coming?" Actually, my oldest asks that, and my youngest just screams, "SANTA!!!" at the top of his lungs. BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT TWO YEAR OLD'S DO.

Seriously, people are already putting up Christmas lights in our neighborhood, and I'm all HOLD THE PHONE PEOPLE...NOT EVEN DECEMBER YET! I'm actually one of those people who really enjoys decorating (when the time is right, of course). It's the TAKING IT ALL DOWN part that gives me ulcers. I literally cringe when I think about de-ornamenting the Christmas tree.

What about you? Are you irritated by early Christmas decorations? The sound of Christmas music playing in stores even though Thanksgiving Day hasn't even passed? Or are you ONE OF THEM? Fess up, I promise I won't yell at you - I might, however, send my two year old to your house so YOU can explain why Santa won't be here for another MONTH AND A HALF! :)

  1. So far, the only thing that's really annoying me is this obnoxious GAP ad on television. It's like a Christmas cheer on crack. Kill me now.

  2. Funny comment about the two year old questions and reactions. I'm living with my godson of the same age right now so that made me chuckle.

I love Christmas lights and Christmas music. It is my favorite day of the year so I like for it to be special (as in not prepared for two months ahead of time). I can semi understand the music being played early because after all, what would Thanksgiving music sound like? But the lights and decorations before it is even December is TOO much for me.

Jill- I saw that ad and it took me a moment to digest what was going on.

  3. We don't have any early Christmas lighters in my neighborhood, which is good because that bugs me too. I went to the mall the other day with my son and I have to admit it was kind of fun to see him get excited about the giant Christmas Tree, even if it was a month too early.

  5. I don't mind the Christmas music, because of its beauty. But I don't like the decorations up before Thanksgiving. I love Thanksgiving too!

  6. There is a radio station here that started playing 24/7 Christmas music starting on Halloween night! I mean, wow. And Target was decked out with Christmas stuff like the day after. It drives me nuts. Poor Thanksgiving gets the short end of the stick.

  7. I love Christmas lights and that home is beautifully decorated. Wow!! But starring at it too long, won't you get tired and lose interest.

I cringe when I think of having to drag the Christmas tree box from the top of the cupboard. Now with no man in the house, I try to do as little exhausting tasks.

Urh should I wish you 'Merry Christmas' now or is it too early lol. Blessings.

  8. I am not one of them. I always find it odd to see Halloween stuff out as soon as Sept. 1 hits. Odd. What's the rush people?

  9. Normally, I get a little bugged by the stores pushing the merchandise so early. This year, I'm already thinking about Christmas. I promise, though: no decorations go up at my house until after Thanksgiving. ;)

  10. Okay, so I was a little tempted recently to turn on the Christmas music. But that was VERY recently, not last month. I saw Christmas lights up already as well--it's way too fast, in my opinion. Please let me enjoy Thanksgiving first!

  11. I heard that commercially they are pushing Christmas early this year to get people in the buying mood...you know, boost that economy! Well, since there is the possibility that baby may come over Thxgiving, I am putting the decorations up the week of Thanksgiving...BEFORE turkey. I hope we can still be friends. (Oh, and I already did my Christmas shopping, but only because newborn and Christmas shopping aren't compatible.)

  12. Yeah, I love celebrating Christmas, but I am annoyed as well. I love Thanksgiving and I find early commercialism of Christmas annoying when I'm busy trying to be thankful for so many things that have nothing to do with lights, reindeer and little elves.

  13. Oh, and by the way, Jill's comment above made me laugh out loud really hard b/c I hadn't realized that that commercial annoyed me as well until she pointed it out.

  14. I'm appalled at all the hoop-la before Thanksgiving, and finding certain toys is already a problem. I went to get something for my daughter's birthday last week and they were already sold out. When I told my husband he said that a lot of retailers are not ordering as many things because they don't want to be stuck with them later. They really are pushing things early.

The problem for Thanksgiving in a free market economy is that it is not inherently commercial like Christmas. It's not going to make retailers (except maybe Turkey vendors and airlines) tons of money.

I refuse to put up my decorations until after the T-day. I can understand someone in Jessie's shoes, but others not so much.

  15. Thank you all for making me feel so much better! I'm really not "Bah Humbug" I swear! ;P Oh, and if you didn't see the Gap Commercial that Jill was talking about, you can see it here:

It really is Christmas cheer on crack!

  16. We're not putting up a tree this year at all...isn't that horible?? With Brogan getting into everything and not quite listening to the word No very well, it's a headache we don't want to experience.

We always wait until the weekend after Thanksgiving to put up our decorations. The mall had decorations up on Halloween this year! Sheesh!
