Bittersweet Symphony

So.

You know that girl who was just SO excited to have her kids in pre-school because of ALL the free time she was going to be having?

Yeah, I don't know where she went.

I'm thinking it's only a momentary lapse in excitement, but I have to admit, today was rough. As much as I ADORED being able to sit at Starbucks and write my little heart out...I REALLY missed my babies. Yep, these babies right here.

These babies that aren't babies anymore. Did I say babies? Babies, babies, babies. I think I need another baby. (Do you hear that groan? That'd be my husband. It's okay honey, it's only for
 today...maybe.)

Speaking of the hubby, he was able to take a few hours off of work to see his boys off to school...such a great Daddy!

Cody was already prepared and excited for his first day since he went last year. He was up before the sun this morning, ready and eager.

Tyler had a great first day, and his teachers are absolute ANGELS. (Anyone who willingly subjects themselves to 10 or more toddlers for three hours at a time is an angel in my book.)

This is the best shot I could get of him and his new teacher, Miss Kim, because he was WAY too interested in playing with toys, and not the LEAST bit interested in posing for Mommy...again.

Just like when Cody started his first day, I was more torn up about our separation than he was. I promptly got in the car after dropping them off, saw the two empty carseats behind me, and had myself a little cry.

After my little cryout, I had a moment of sheer panic, like, WHAT THE HECK DO I DO NOW?

That's when I remembered...WHATEVER I WANT! :)

I got A LOT of writing done at Starbucks. It's amazing what you can do when there's no one distracting you. And the barista even offered to refresh my Chai tea for me! (It's the little things, right?)

*As I'm writing this, my son is in the bathroom screaming for me to come wipe him. Back to reality. Why does my reality always involve poop? Maybe I can continue my Ode to Time Alone some other time when I'm...you know...alone.

  1. Oh, Beth, they are PRECIOUS!!!!!

I got so much done when my little one went to school on the first day but then in the afternoon I was like, "Okay, I want her to come home now." LOL!

And my second grader STILL gets called "my baby". :)

  2. Your boys are adorable. I know how you feel. Although, I cried when I dropped my daughter off at high school this year. Enjoy every second with your little ones, because the time goes by so quckly.

  3. Lol, "Why does my reality always involve poop?" One of the most profound questions I've heard all day :)

Your boys are so cute! Good to hear you got some writing done--you'll get used to it, I promise!

  4. I meandered over to your site from Katie's and have enjoyed reading your posts. Yesterday was my youngest granddaughter's first day at kindergarten. How can that be? Wasn't it just last month that I was taking pictures of her as a newborn??? As Lazy Writer has said, poop and all, time goes by much too fast.

  7. Your kids are adorable and seem wonderful! I'm glad that you were able to get a lot of work done at Starbucks. I love Barnes & Noble even more these days because they have Starbucks in them and they offer free wi-fi. When I write I find myself constantly needing to get on Google to check some or another fact. I also need m-w.com to survive sometimes because i have so many words floating around in my head.

  8. I think we all have those moments when we realize that our kids are no longer babies. I had a moment like that last week when I was looking at photos. I almost cried when I realized how big my three year old has gotten! No longer a baby, just like you said!

  9. Hi, Beth! I'm here from Lazy Writer's blog. I saw your comment on today's post, and your music list caught my eye. Love each of them!

I can relate to this post, too, because my youngest started preschool yesterday. I dropped her off, cried as I drove to meet friends for lunch, and then soaked in jubilation over time to myself.

  10. Regina - Thank you! I WISH B&N was closer to my house, but it's probably better that it's not because then my family would have to take out a missing person's report on me!
Jody - I cannot even GO NEAR my kids' baby photos, it's just way too emotional right now!
Janna - Thanks for stopping by and for your sweet comments! It's a guilty pleasure, being without one's children, isn't it? I love it, and feel awful for it, all in the same heartbeat!

  11. Beth - your boys are ADORABLE!! Absolutely adorable!! And I love the name Cody. Always have. A small part (who am I kidding...a big part) of me is very jealous of you (but in a total Christianly, I still love you type of way). My free time these days has been nonexistant.

  12. Katie - I apologize for wagging my free time in your face - and you had me almost on the floor laughing at your "in a total Christianly" way comment! :)
